about
Every 20 years, there is a Saturn- Jupiter Conjunction. On Dec 21st, 2020, there was what was called a “Great” Conjunction- “great”, because it was the first time in 800 years that Saturn and Jupiter passed so closely, and at night, therefore visible to stargazers. Unfortunately, I missed it. But the next night, I was home for a very quiet Christmas with my mum at her house in Argenta, BC, and we went out for a walk to see if we might catch any lingering effects of this unique planetary alignment.
Although we didn’t see what we had been hoping to see, Venus and Mars were as bright as ever, and the stars emanated an ancient beauty. I found myself simultaneously captivated by the mystery and reassured by the consistency of the night sky. Although it was cold outside, we stayed out for an hour, meandering through the peaceful beauty surrounding us. We talked honestly about life and the universe. For my whole life, my mum has always had a keen interest in astrology, and I grew up relating to and referencing my astrological chart as a piece of my identity. I wrote “Written in the Stars” as a reflection of our mother-daughter relationship and the conversations we had that night.
lyrics
I went out for a walk on a cold winter night
I did not see Saturn return, but the moon sure did look fine
No jupiter either, but Venus and Mars were bright
Been reading what’s written in the stars for quite some time
I don’t trust my memory, I don’t trust my mind
I don’t trust my tongue to speak the right words after all this wine
Wouldn’t trust a feeling, couldn’t trust this heart of mine
Been trying not to say “I love you” for quite some time
Someday, baby, you’ll leave me, leave me lonely and cryin’
It won’t matter how hard that I try, it’s only a matter of time
‘Cause if you don’t then I’ll leave you at the scene of the crime
Been daring you to break my heart for quite some time
I went out for a walk on a cold winter day
Mercury’s retrograde again and I don’t know what to say
Must be this moon in Pisces, I can’t rationalize
Been praying you might send me a sign for quite some time
Must be this moon in Pisces, I can’t rationalize
Been praying you might send me a sign for quite some time
