about

My dad named me after the old growth cedar forests of “Tenise Creek”. I wrote “Tree Story” as a reflection of my namesake. Having been raised in a remote community in the mountains, I come by my affinity for trees honestly. This song compares myself to a tree, considering all the qualities we have in common, and the ways in which I continue to be inspired by them.

lyrics

You can’t build a house with a cactus tree
You can’t build a house with me
I’m hollow in the middle, thick skinned, a little brittle
More than I wanted to be

You saddle up and say you wanna settle down among the trees
But I will leave you wondering
You tie a tight rope on those high hopes
You find yourself climbing
Though I will leave you by the spring

You can’t build a house from this evergreen
This cedar means too much to me
Don’t cut me down, I won’t stick around
I am not yours to keep

You sail in from the city, say you’ll settle down with me, among the trees
But I will leave you on your knees
That silver lining you just can’t stop seeing
Has lost some meaning for me

You can’t build a house from this evergreen
My freedom means too much to me
Don’t let me fall, let me stand tall
Be all that I want to be
I am not yours to keep
